"Canton Road" (2000)
My favorite photograph I've ever shot, taken in my favorite city, the land of my paternal ancestors, three years after the handover of Hong Kong from Great Britain to Mainland China. If our best work is sometimes our most spontaneous and unexpected, I shot this photo while trying to use up the exposures at the end of a roll, eagerly anticipating a different shot (a shot which ultimately didn’t turn out as intended). This is also my most exhibited, most purchased, and most complimented photograph. I've spent over 20 years trying to recreate it in every city I visit, but have found peace with the notion that it remains very much one of a kind for me.
